![]() ![]() Her second poetry collection, SAME STORY, will be published by Verve Poetry Press in 2023. She has had work published by Kitchen Table Quarterly, Last Leaves Magazine, T’Art Magazine, Exist Otherwise, Erato Magazine, Messy Misfits Club, Fifth Wheel Press, Moonlove, Popshot Quarterly, and The Rail, and been featured on the Dead Darlings and Artists That Work podcasts. The period I will talk about today therefore spans from to 15 November 2021. In 2022, her play WATCHDOG was a top ten finalist for the Titchfield Festival Theatre Playwriting Award and received an honourable mention from the Jewish Plays Project annual contest. Because of when I started seriously submitting, the arbitrary date that marks the start of my ‘writing year’ is 15 May. ![]() She is a two-time Genesis Poetry Slam winner and has been commissioned by JW3, Canada Water Theatre, Watch Your Mouth, Vashti Media, and The Narcissist Cookbook. She is a founding member of Sovereign Writers Group, co-host of Process, and Events Officer at the Vagina Museum. ![]() I’m excited to see what upcoming issues will bring.Kayla (she/they) is a British-American, Queer, Jewish, sober, neurodivergent director and writer for the page, stage, and screen, currently based in London. The subscription seems quite reasonable, especially when I keep in mind the work that goes into writing and illustrating great work. I’m very excited to have found a magazine like this. Because of their short nature, much shorter than the stories in, say the Tor.com anthology, it did not feel like a slog going through a story that I may not have liked.Ī tip of my hat goes to the publisher. Overall, the illustrations and the stories felt like a new dive and adventure. But I still felt surprised with each page. The stories are diverse and can vary from author to author. I think of the magazine as a themed anthology. ![]() They help illustrate and give context to the story and help separate one story from the next. A picture book in the vein of ones for children. I would describe it as a picture book for adults. The colors, the illustrations, they all pop from the page. The magazine does a great job presenting work in a beautiful manner. While Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are still dealing with the loss of Tess, her memory is very much alive in this capsule episode that introduces us to Frank (Murray Bartlett) and Joel (Nick Offerman). I think what he does is inspiring and it has made me explore the world of designs and I have kept my eyes out for new and exciting graphic designs used aroudn me. The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 3, Long, Long Time, lays all the cards on the table and gives us an idea of what it means to protect those you love. Why graphic design? Well, I’ve become obsessed with Field Notes over the past year or two and have been following the artwork of the creator, Aaron James Draplin. The magazine melds two things that I have recently taken an interest in. On a side note, I guess I judge books/magazines by the cover… It is the colors used by the artist, the shapes and the style. The fact that they labeled themselves as an “The Illustrated Magazine of New Writing” only further raised interests and I decided to gamble on it. The magazine was sealed, so I could not open and browse the insides, but the cover alone piqued my interest. It was issue 27, their Mystery Issue, and I was struck with the color and the illustration of the cover. Popshot Quarterly stood out on the shelf like a bright beacon in a dark night. But in anycase, I am paying for it with my own hard earned cash. I would be excited if they did because that would mean a free subscription. I just had to talk about it here.įirst, I should say that they are not paying me to say things about them. One day I made ventured to my local book store and found a magazine, Popshot Quarterly, that really sparked my interest. I’m not even sure what that means, but I do know that I would learn something just by reading diverse stories. Perhaps something that is considered “literary” by critics. That’s all well and good, but I also know that I should branch out and read other things. I think anyone who looks at my previous post will have noticed that I have a preference for science fiction stories. I have been reading a lot of novels and short stories. ![]()
